Safety boats and officials

There will be a boat inspector on shore to call time for boating and check boats for adherence to BR Safety Code and signing on and off the water

There will be 3/4 boats on the water

  1. Lead boat, low wake, 2 people, driver +1 person: Leads the race

  2. Safety boat, 2 people, driver +1 person: Follows the race

  3. Start boat, 3/4 people , driver, umpire, time keeper x 2: Close to shore at anchor

  4. Extra marshall, 2 people, driver and photographer: Mobile, middle of course

All safety boat drivers will be RYA Level 2 qualified and will carry a VHF radio and Launch Rescue Kit

Emergency Plan

Radio communications VHF channel 72 (to be confirmed on the day)

In the event of an emergency the safety officer (Fred Hall) will co-ordinate communications. 

Rescue from the water will be by the safety boat and if needed the coastguard will be contacted. If a crew member is injured, the crew should alert the safety boat using the VHF radio channel for the event to seek advice. The safety boat will advise the best course of action. If the crew are in a position to be able to row to shore they should do so. Emergency landing is at the Mylor Harbour public slipway, where first aid is available by qualified personal (Caitlin McConnell and Katherine Greenhead).

In the event of sinking or capsize, crews must remain with their boat, (unless the boat is in danger of complete submergence or in a dangerous area of water such as rocks), until the safety boat arrives.

Cancellation Policy

The event committee will monitor the weather and water conditions in advance of and during the regatta. Where possible, any cancellation will be made by 8pm on Thursday 17th September. If conditions worsen beyond this point and are thought to be unsafe, the committee will make the decision to either stop or cancel the regatta.

The committee will take into account:

  • Weather forecast

  • Wind and water conditions

  • Ability of competitors and types of boats, for example the coxed quads may be able to compete in heavier seas than the small boats

  • Length of course, for example the course could be shortened from 6k to 4k
